Power4Home Customer Feedback – Is It Any Good?

I bought a copy of John Russel Power4Home in April 2009 because I wanted to do some research on home solar power system. The Power4Home web site keeps popping up everything I do a search query on residential solar power system on the search engine. I decided to purchase a copy and see what it has to offer.

Straight off the bat, John Russel mentioned in his web site you can start generating electricity at home for less than $200. That statement is not entirely correct.

Yes, you can start generating electricity from a solar panel with less than $200. In fact, a DIY solar panel can be made with $150.

To make use of the Direct Current (DC) generated by the solar array, you’ll need other solar components such as DC disconnect, meter gauges, circuit breaker, charge controller, deep cycle batteries, power inverter etc.

These components are not cheap. All in all, you will need at least $1000 to $1500 to make a reasonable size home solar power system. The system will be able to power most of your home electrical appliances and all lighting fixtures.

It may not be suitable to power energy hungry devices such as air conditioner unit or refrigerator. For this type of equipment, you will need to draw power from the grid.

So is Power4Home any good?

People who visited John Russel’s web site may get very excited about the prospect of using solar energy to reduce their home energy consumption. However, the budget to set up a complete residential solar system is way off.

There is a positive side to the manual though. The step by step instructional videos to make a DIY solar panel is pretty good. It is professionally done and was recorded in High Definition (HD).

If you are good with hand tool and like to start your own home solar power project, Power4Home will provide you with the information to help you get started.

DIY Residential Wind Turbine Video

A home wind generator system is very similar to a home solar power system. Instead of solar panels to capture the energy from the sun, a home wind generator uses a wind turbine to turn the kinetic energy of wind and converts it into Direct Current (DC).

The video above shows how a typical residential wind power system will look like. The turbine is setup 5 feet in the air to capture the wind. It uses a 12 volt generator and is kicking out 600 – 800 watts of electricity.

Similar to a home solar power system, the wind generator is connected to meter gauges, controller and finally, the power is stored in deep cycle batteries.

An inverter is used to convert the Direct Current (DC) from the batteries to Alternative Current (AC). The AC can then be used to power all the electrical appliances.

How To Build Home Solar Panels – It’s Not As Easy As You Think

Many home owners like to reduce their home electricity consumption by using free energy from the sun. Because of that, the home solar power industry has grown into a billion dollar market in the United States.

Unfortunately, installing a complete solar power system for your home can be quite expensive. If you didn’t know, prepare to be shocked and awed.

You’ll need to invest at least $40,000 and above to get a robust system that will fulfill all your household energy needs!

Many people would not be able to afford that or rather they are hesitant to invest in the system because it takes a few decades to recoup their investment.

As a cheaper alternative, many home owners are turning to the Do It Yourself (DIY) home solar system.

One of the components of the solar system which you can make on your own is the solar panel. The construction process is not easy, but it is definitely possible.

For those who are technically challenged or you have trouble operating a hand tool, the process would not be easy for you. The best option for you is to ask someone to help you or pay someone to make the solar panel for you.

If you have some experience working in your garage or workshop, your next step is to get a solar panel design blueprint. You’ll need a step by step instructional plan and wiring diagram for the panel.

When you have the plan, the next step is to prepare the budget. You will need to source for Photovoltaic (PV) cells and all the necessary lumber and electrical components.

How much money do you need to set aside for 1 solar panel? Generally, you’ll need about $200 or less.

What are the tools do you need?

To make the solar panel, you will need a multi-meter, screwdriver, soldering iron, wire cutter, pen knife, glue gun, hand drill and hand saw. These tools are fairly basic and you can buy them from your local hardware store.

Remember, you are working with electricity in your project. Make sure your design plan is proven and reliable. Make sure you understand the concept of a DIY solar panel.

Any mistake or error in the design can be harmful to you and your home. The electric spark caused by the faulty wiring has the potential of burning your house down!

This is not to discourage you from making your own solar powered panel, but rather to remind you to practice safety first.
