It is enough to support all the lighting fixtures and most of the electrical appliances. It may not be able to handle energy hungry appliances such as refrigerator, heater, air-conditioner etc. The solar panel is not connected to the grid, rather it is connected to the charge controller. The charge controller is connected to the battery bank. The battery bank is connected to the ciruit box and then the power will go to the grid. This is a very simple explanation. If you want to get your home off the grid, I would strongly suggest to get the help of a professional solar contractor. Hi Ralph,

The stumbling block for me is the statement made in one of the articles that to connect a solar panel to the grid the panel had to be UL certified.
