This evident from the recent happenings that world economy is really in bad shape and is not doing that well. The recent recession, high unemployment, corporate organization closing down and increased in prices of essential commodities has really made life miserable.

These days’ people do not take it as a blessing if they are earning in dollars. Everybody in a household has a fixed obligation, which everybody has to fulfill every month. These obligations are regular expenses like kid’s tuition fee, electricity bills, food bills, house rent, taxes and much more, apart from this you need to save for medical and life insurance etc. Talk about a burden!

Everybody would like to save in these difficult times, and more so if it amounts to hundreds of dollars every month. This is quite possible if you install a solar power system to supplement your home electricity needs because you will save hundreds of dollars. You also get to use energy which is clean and is available in abundance and unending.

The electricity which is produced from other sources not only spoil the environment but this also cause depletion of the earth’s resources. It is an established fact that the Sun is the good source of energy which can be used to produce electricity. It is also termed as green energy which is renewable and does not cause any damage to Mother Nature.

Installing a solar power system and producing electricity at home is an excellent alternative to the conventional electricity from the power grid. People are often discouraged with the Photovoltaic (PV) system installation costs which are quite high, but with the advancement in technology, the initial cost has come down considerably.

Now every household can produce power using solar panels by spending few hundred dollars. This has been made possible due to economy of scale which has lowered the production cost of PV panels from around the world thus making it easier for anyone to generate electricity at home.

The number solar panel you may require depends upon your household electricity needs and consumption. If you have more appliances which use electricity, you will need more solar panels. The number of solar panels and batteries to store the electric charge is directly related to your total power needs.

This means adding more solar panels and battery storage, but if you see the benefits associated with it, you will not mind putting investment into the system. Don’t be surprise that you can save 80% of your electricity bills when the PV cells and solar equipment are all up and running.

If you are good with hand tools, there are a number of home Do It Yourself (DIY) solar power systems which you can install yourself following proper instructions. You have an option to buy readymade solar power system which would cost you anything from $7,000 to $15,000 or go for a DIY approach which will cost you only $3000 or less.

All the material required is easily available in the local hardware stores. You can get all the guidance required for the installation of solar power system on the internet.

Installing a PV system on your own can be fun, once you see that you are able to produce your own electricity, you will feel highly satisfied and contended. You have now ample power available which can run your electric gadgets without worrying about the energy bills any more.

There is no doubt that everybody likes to use a cleaner source of energy and that, by far, solar energy is the cheapest and cleanest source of alternative energy. However, many are worried about the cost involved in installing and maintaining solar panels.

This blog post is intended to give a rough idea about the approximate cost of installing solar panels at homes.

Solar Panels Are Maintenance Free

Those who have already set up solar installations at their homes know that solar panels need the least or no maintenance. To make the best use of sunlight, solar panels are mostly installed on house roofs. While fixing solar panels on the house roofs, people have to be exceptionally careful.

Whether the solar panels are built by yourself or you bought them readymade from the stores, you must follow the instructions very carefully while installing them on your roof. If you face any difficulty in setting up the solar panels, get professional help from a qualified solar energy technician.

But you know that calling in a professional to set your solar panels up will cost you more in terms of service charges. So, to reduce the cost of installing your solar panels, try to do it yourself. Working on the roof is not very safe. You may slip and fall and get hurt.

To avoid such an unpleasant incident, take a friend or a family member with you while you install your solar panels on your roof.

Your Initial Expenses

Your initial expenses relate to the parts and pieces you need to buy from the solar energy store. If you build the solar cells yourself, it will roughly cost you between $120 and $240.

Readymade solar cells will cost between $300 and $400. The amount of solar electricity produced depends on the number of solar cells. Adding a few more solar cells doesn’t cost you much.

But at the same time, increasing the number of solar cells will make three to four fold increase in the solar power produced. The cost of a very high powered solar panel is around $4,000. The choice of the solar cells depends on your budget and your energy needs.

Of course, you don’t need very expensive solar cells. What you need to do to get more energy is to increase the number of average sized solar cells which don’t cost very high. What makes solar energy so attractive is the fact that Photovoltaic (PV) solar cells are maintenance free once they are installed. They last for more than 20 years.

The efficiency of solar cells to convert sunlight into solar electricity may be affected if the solar panel is covered with dust and debris. If you clean the solar panels from time to time, the solar cells will remain as efficient as they were in the beginning.

Your initial investment in solar energy will be recovered within 9 years of installing solar panels at your home. Your electricity bill will be substantially reduced and there will be no bill at all if you are self-sufficient with the solar power you produce at your home.

If you are planning to use solar energy for your home, there are a couple of ways you can go about it. The easiest and direct approach is to engage a professional solar contractor to install the system for you. However, this is also the most expensive approach. A complete system installed by a contractor will cost upwards of $30,000!

The second option, also a cheaper alternative, is to build the solar system via a Do It Yourself (DIY) approach. Basically, you buy all the solar components and set them up yourself.

Before you start a DIY home solar power project, it is best you have some understanding on electricity and know the science behind a solar system.

If you have no idea how the system works, check out the GreenDIYEnergy pdf files. The files are actually part of a package from www.greendiyenergy.com which was created to provide the information to assist DIY enthusiasts to build a residential solar energy system.

In actual fact, the program is more than just e-books on solar energy. There is also a complete section showing you how to make a home wind generator to work in sync with the solar system.

The GreenDIYEnergy package comes with 4 pdf e-books that cover DIY solar and wind power and there are also 6 High Definition (HD) step by step instruction videos on solar and 8 HD videos on DIY wind generator.

These videos are not the low quality type that you can find on YouTube but rather they are high quality recordings with excellent audio and visual with professional commentator.

So is the GreenDIYEnerygy pdfs worth your investment?

Most information products sold through the internet are covered by a 60 days money back guarantee policy. Meaning, if you do not see any value from the package, you can ask for a full refund within 60 days of your purchase date.

Hence, there are no risks on you whatsoever. The risk lies on the publisher of the information themselves. They have to provide excellent quality information or they will get lots of refund. Fortunately, the guys behind GreenDIYEnergy have a good product.

What I’m writing here may not make any sense to a lot of people but nonetheless, I’ll try to explain it.

As I was trying to find a topic to write on my blog, I started to do some keyword research. Keyword research is a process where I try to find out what are the terms other internet users typed into the search engine.

As I was doing my research, I came across the phrase “GreenDIYEnergy complaints”. Initially my thought was, “Oh boy! Here we go again”.

GreenDIYEnergy is one of the top selling information products on home renewable energy system. If you are a home owner and you are searching for ways to reduce your electricity consumption, GreenDIYEnergy will show you how to tap the power from solar and wind.

When someone typed on the word “complaints”, most of the results from Google, Yahoo or Bing will come out negative.

Personally, I don’t like to read those stuff…it makes my blood boils!

I decided to go ahead and see what I will get.

Since Google is the most popular search engine, I typed in the phrase “GreenDIYEnergy complaints” in the search box.

The result returned by Google was very interesting. There are only 2 pages as of early January 2010! And those 2 pages were not even relevant.

What does this means?

To put it very simple, not a lot of people on the world wide web are complaining about GreenDIYEnergy. From my pass experience, I know other home renewable energy guides have a lot of negative feedback.

Honestly, I was quite surprise when I notice this with GreenDIYEnergy.

Does this means GreenDIYEnergy is a good manual to purchase?

Well, I have a copy of the e-book and so far, the step by step instructional videos is the best compared to other manuals on the web. The quality is really good and the information on how to make a DIY solar panel was very concise.

Lately, I checked the members’ area, they just uploaded 4 new high definition (HD) videos on DIY home wind turbine. Same video quality and again, excellent information.

The first time I heard of the name Brian Clark is when I watched the DIY solar panel instructional videos from Green DIY Energy. That was about a year ago.

During that time, the power utility company just raised the power rates and I was paying a large sum of money for electricity at home.

I wanted to learn how I can use solar energy to supplement the power needs at home. Hence, that has lead me to purchasing the Green DIY Energy manual.

There were 6 high definition (HD) videos on homemade solar panel that come with the program. Brain was the host and he gave a very clear and concise instruction in the videos.

I did a further research on Brian Clark and found some interesting information. Brian and the GreenDIYEnergy team have been going around impoverish communities and teaching them how to make residential solar panel.

He has conducted solar workshop teaching people new skill on build solar array so they can make a living from it.

In the year 2009, Brian and his team have been to Cochiti Pueblo in New Mexico, PineRidge, Indian Reservation South Dakota and Uganda, Africa where they conducted the solar workshops.

Through the SolarGoodWill.org web site, Brian Clark is sharing his specialized knowledge on solar power and teaching people how to generate electricity from the sun. In some rural communities, they have no access to electricity and their only option is solar power.

If you would like to give a donation, you can do so at the SolarGoodWill.org web site. Here’s some great news. Every dollar you donate, Green DIY Energy will match your donation up to $1000.

For more information about them, check out the Green DIY Energy review on this blog. You can also get access to Brian Clark’s step by step DIY solar panel videos.

If you have a home, you know the electricity bill is one of your largest household expenses every month. Do you have to pay more for power compared to last year? I had to because the local power utility company decided to increase the energy rate in mid of 2008.

As of now, they are still pushing the government to allow them to increase the rate yet again!

That is one of the reason I decided to look into alternative energy sources to supplement my home electricity requirement. That has led me to research on renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

One of the first resources I bought from the internet on renewable energy is GreenDIYEnergy solar wind guide. The main web site is located at www.greendiyenergy.com.

Was it a good purchase?

Personally, I did learn a lot from the program. GreenDIYEnergy comes with 2 pdf guide books that covers Do It Yourself (DIY) solar panel and wind generator.

One of my favorite is the 6 High Definition (HD) step by step instructional videos on how to make a solar panel for less than $200. The quality of the videos is really good and I am very impressed by it.

Initially, I didn’t know a home solar power system has so many components. I though all you’ll need is to set up a solar panel and couple of batteries.

As it turns out, a complete residential solar energy system needs components such as DC disconnect, power gauges, charge controller, battery bank, power inverter, backup diesel generator etc.

Product Guarantee

If you have never bought anything from the web before, you may not know this. Your purchase from the internet comes with a 60 days money back guarantee. If for any reason you are not happy with your purchase, you can contact the seller and ask for a full refund.

The policy is the same for the GreenDIYEnergy solar wind guide. So far I am quite happy with my purchase and decided to keep my copy.

If you are tired of rising energy cost, check out the GreenDIYEnergy manual. It will give you some good tips and recommendation on how you can reduce your home power consumption with minimal cost.

One of the upcoming home green energy guide on the internet is the Green DIY Energy program. In the members’ area, you actually get to access 6 High Definition (HD) instructional videos on how to make your own solar panel.

Apart from the video series, there are also 4 bonus e-books available for download that covers the topic of DIY solar panel and DIY wind generator. In this blog post I am going to do a review of the Do It Yourself (DIY) solar panel guide e-book.

The $98 Homemade Solar Panel

The core message behind this guide is how to make a solar panel for under $100…$98 to be exactly. I was pretty skeptical initially. I thought you will need a bigger budget in order to do that.

To show you that it is possible to work on such a low budget, there is a cost break down of all the parts and components for the solar module.

The biggest cost is the Photovoltaic (PV) cells. The author of the manual actually recommends getting the solar cells from eBay. The idea is to get slightly damaged or cracked cells. These are definitely cheaper compared to new solar cells.

The second largest cost for the project is on miscellaneous wood which you have to get from the lumber yard. If you have some plywood laying around, you can use them to get your cost even lower.

The other items are pretty inexpensive that you may already have in your garage. Items such as silicone caulk, screws, Plexiglas, paint etc.

Step By Step Instructions

One thing that I really like in this e-book is the step by step instructions. Reading the manual, it will take you through the following process:

1) Checking and joining the solar cells together.

You have to check all the cells you’ve bought from eBay to make sure them are in good working condition. You will need a multi-meter to do this.

The next step is to solder all the PV cells together. To understand how this is done, you should watch one of the video in the series. The host, Byran Clark will show you how to use the soldering gun, solder and the flux.

2) Building the solar panel box.

The next thing you have to do is make the box where it will house all the solar cells. The key here is the dimension, the material and protective coating to make it lasts.

3) Preparing the substrate.

If you didn’t know, the PV cells are not affixed the solar panel box. Instead, they are glued on to a substrate. Again, the importance here is to get the dimension right and protective coatings.

4) Plexiglas cover.

In this section, the manual will show you how to attach the clear Plexiglas to the solar panel. It is not as easy as it seems.

You have to follow the steps recommended in order to prevent the Plexiglas from bending, cracking or moisture seeping into the PV cells area.

5) Panel testing and assembly.

The final stage of making your own solar module is to test it and then assemble it. Again, you will need to use a multi-meter to do this.

Manual Review Conclusion

So what’s my verdict? The DIY solar panel guide from Green DIY Energy is good. If you use it together with their HD instructional videos, it makes it “Great”!

Some people may not be able to understand the instructions on the e-book. The videos actually show you how the steps are done. It complements the guide nicely.

In the 5th video of the Green DIY Energy “Build your own solar panel for less than $100” series, you get to learn how to assembly your Do It Yourself (DIY) solar panel.

The most challenging part of making the solar module is already done. The tough part is to solder all the Photovoltaic cells together. Now that they are all joined together, it is time to connect the positive and negative home run wires to extract power from the cells.

Blocking Current Backflow

Many people do not know this. The solar panel creates current when exposed to sun light. The current can be used to charge a battery. What happens at night when there is no sun light?

As a matter of fact, current from the battery will actually flow back into the solar cells. This means, the PV cells is becoming an electric load that will drain power from the battery.

How do we overcome this problem? We use a simple blocking diode. The blocking diode is to be installed on the positive home run wire.

The function of the diode is to block any backflow of current into the cells. It is a very useful little component that will maximizes your residential solar power system.

Here’s a tip. If you are using a charge controller to charge the battery, you do not need a blocking diode. The charge controller will do the function of the diode by maintaining a “one way street” for the current to flow.

Covering The Solar Cells

When it’s time to cover the solar cells in the solar panel, use a piece of clear Plexiglas. It is important for you to choose a Plexiglas that is UV proof.

Reason for this is because the panel will be exposed to sun light and UV ray most of the time. A normal Plexiglas will turn yellow after some time. The yellow surface will reduce the total amount of sun reaching the PV cells therefore reducing the power output.

When sealing the panel, make sure every joints are tight. You don’t want any moisture getting into the panel. If moisture caused by rain or show were to get into the panel, it will get trapped under the Plexiglas and affect the panel performance.

Using Screwdriver Instead Of The Drill

When you watch Bryan Clark, the host in the video installs the Plexiglas, you will see the right way of securing it to the panel.

He uses stainless stain screws. He drives the screws in initially with the drill but stop when the head of the screw is about to reach the Plexiglas.

The last couple of turn on the screws is recommended for you to use a screwdriver and crank it manually. This will give you a better feel and control of the screw. You don’t want the screw head to reach all the way into the Plexiglas or you will crack it.
